Robert Parker 92 points - Although it is produced from a separate vineyard, Balthus is in essence the special cuvee of Chateau de Reignac. Cropped at 15 hectoliters per hectare, both its alcoholic and malolactic fermentations take place in small barrels (an unusual as well as labor intensive technique), and the wine is aged on its lees before being bottled unfiltered. The blockbuster 2005 boasts an inky/purple color, 14.5% natural alcohol, and a huge, charcoal-infused nose revealing notions of graphite, melted chocolate, espresso, and creme de cassis. This is a terrific example of what can be achieved by a conscientious proprietor using artisinal techniques and treating the vineyard like a precious jewel. The 2005 will require 1-3 years of bottle age, and should last for 10-15 years. (92-94) points. (Apr 2006)
