| Giovanni di Piero Antinori joined the Florentine Guild of Vintners in 1385, beginning a wine legend that has lasted over 26 generations. Throughout the company's history, it has remained family owned and operated. Today, Marchese Piero Antinori directs the long-lived family vision, and his three daughters participate in various activities throughout the firm.
Through carefully planned investments and research programs, the firm is dedicated to improving the quality of its wines. One of Italy's most dynamic and visionary producers of fine wines, with estates concentrated in the finest and highly progressive viticultural areas of Tuscany and Umbria, Antinori has also played an important role in preserving Italy's enological traditions. Marchese Piero Antinori summarizes the family's core values by saying, "Age-old roots play an important role in our philosophy, but they have not served to inhibit our innovative spirit."
Ornellaia:
The outstanding Tenuta dell'Ornellaia is located in Bolgheri, the birthplace of many legendary Super-Tuscans, such as Sassicaia. In great vintages, the wine is one of the best investments in the wine market.
Named for the grove of flowering ash trees surrounding the winery, Ornellaia is the estate's principal wine. The 63 acres of predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with small plantings of Cabernet Franc vines, lie on elevated parcels composed of clay, gravel and loam soils. Clones of diverse origin yield a rich palette of nuances. All grapes are de-stemmed, gently pressed and introduced into either wooden or stainless steel fermentation vessels. Maceration takes place over a period of 25 to 32 days at a temperature not exceeding 30°C during which time the wine completes its alcoholic fermentation. The juice remains unblended until the wines have spent approximately one year in small French barriques. The final cuvée is assembled to evoke the vinous finesse of the Cabernet highlighted by ripe, aromatic notes of Merlot in an elegant yet firm style, balancing fruit, acidity, oak and tannic backbone.
